Born in 1990 in Munich, bass-baritone Matthias Winckhler studied voice at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Andreas Macco and Lied with Wolfgang Holzmair. He took part in masterclasses with artists such as Matthias Goerne, Christa Ludwig, and Bejun Mehta. He was a scholarship holder of the Walter & Charlotte Hamel and Walter Kaminsky Foundations.
Winckhler won First Prize at the 2014 Salzburg Mozart Competition and was a prizewinner at the Leipzig Bach Competition (2012), Berlin Junior Voice Competition (2010), and Schubert Lied Duo Competition Dortmund (2014).
From 2015–2018 he was a soloist at Hannover State Opera, performing roles including Count Almaviva, Papageno, and Albert. He works regularly with conductors like Antonini, Goebel, Noseda, Suzuki, and Savall, and has sung with the Vienna Philharmonic, Bach Collegium Japan, and the Oslo Philharmonic. He has appeared at leading festivals including the Salzburg Festival and the Salzburg Mozart Week.
